“Para po!” That’s what passengers say to take off from a jeepney ride. Shortened as “jeep” or “dyip” in Tagalog, it has become one of the cultural icons of the Philippines. It is also deemed the national transportation. They are also called, “Public Utility Vehicles”.

In the 1950s after WWII, American soldiers left a surplus of jitneys. These vehicles were modified over time. They evolved into what we now call “jeepneys”.

In the Philippines, a jeepney can be a great way to get around on the cheap. However, don’t expect it to be a smooth ride. Flagging one down can be a chaotic experience. Drivers honk and yell to get passengers’ attention. And once you’re in, the packed seats and stifling heat can make for an uncomfortable trip. But hey, it’s all part of the experience, right?
